Our Responsibility to You
Music therapy requires a trusting relationship between client and therapist to create a truly safe space.
With this trust comes vulnerability. Therefore, we take your physical and psychological safety very seriously.
Here is a list of our responsibilities to our clients, our community and our profession.
All Music Therapists have a responsibility to:
- receive certification from the CAMT (Canadian Association of Music Therapists) in order to practice music therapy. This means that a music therapist has completed all requirements of the CAMT in order to ethically practice as a clinician. Each Certified Music Therapist (MTA) has a certification number and can supply it upon demand. For more information about the certification requirements and to check the standing of a music therapist anywhere in Canada, click here
- uphold the CAMT Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice. Click to view each. (The CAMT Standards of Practice are being revised. Until completed, we are using the American association’s equivalent)
- maintain continuing education requirements. An MTA must stay current with all research within their scope of practice. This means that music therapists are practicing from an evidenced-based perspective.
- uphold the privacy of their clients. Music Therapists are held to the standards of PIPEDA (Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act). This privacy act sets standards for the storage procedures of physical and electronic files, privacy measures ensuring the confidentiality of all client information, and circumstances that this information can legally be requested.
In addition, Transformative Music Therapy:
- is a registered business with the Government of Canada.
- has professional liability insurance up to $2,000,000 and commercial general liability insurance up to $2,000,000
- has police checks and vulnerable person checks available to view upon request. These checks are renewed every 3 years.
- works to uphold the privacy standards of PIPEDA in our online programming. We recognize that not every online platform is completely secure. We ensure that all of our clients are made aware of the risks involved with online programming and take our best efforts to ensure a safe environment.
